STEUBEN and FUKUOKO, Japan – Fumiko Nakamura West, 76, of Milbridge, formerly of Steuben and Japan, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, at a local health care facility with her loving family by her side. She was born Jan. 24, 1933, in Kurume Shi, Fukuoko Ken, Japan, daughter of the late Yotaro and Mitsue Nakamura. Fumiko married Maurice West, May 20, 1958, in Japan, while he was serving in the U.S. Air Force. They moved back to the U.S. in late 1958. They made their permanent home in Steuben. Fumiko was a devoted wife. She worked for the former Stinson’s Canning Co. for many years. She loved camping with her husband and their dog, Susie. She also loved spending holidays with her American family. She was a devoted sister and aunt to her Japanese family and looked forward to visiting. Fumiko also enjoyed spending time with her special friends, Taiko, Setsuko, Yayoi and Sachiko. Fumiko was very crafty. She was a beautiful seamstress and loved to knit. Surviving for her American family is her guardian angel, Priscilla Kennedy and husband, Roger, of Steuben; sisters-in-law, Sylvia West and Margaret Grant; brother-in-law, Curtis West; many nieces and nephews. Her Japanese family includes sisters, Sumiko Nakamura and Kimiko Tsutsumi; a brother, Mrsatoshi Nakamura; many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Maurice. A very special thanks to the compassionate employees of Narraguagus Bay Healthcare Facility that cared for her and made her smile and a special thanks to her girls there. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, at Evergreen Cemetery, Milbridge.
