BANGOR and NORTH BERWICK, Scotland – Lara F. Bailey, 71, wife of the late Thomas R. Bailey, ended her journey on earth Aug. 23, 2009, surrounded by her family and friends. Lara was born Aug. 28, 1937, in Edinburgh, Scotland, the daughter of John Jack and Jesse Ingalls (Fergus) Gardiner. Lara and Tom enjoyed a full, loving and incredible life together. They traveled the world together, and enjoyed their years at camps in Greenville at Squaw and at Lucerne. Lara loved her position as Lady Lara during Tom’s year as potentate of Anah Shriners in 1984. During Tom’s active years in the Shrine, Lara was also involved in Sunshine Club for Children and after with Ladies of Past Potentates. Lara was also involved in local volunteer and civic organizations including St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, where she served as chair of the fashion show for many years. She was also a member of Eastern Maine Medical Center Auxiliary and performed in the Follies. Lara was a member of Tuscan Chapter No. 148 Order of the Eastern Star and QUIPUS. Lara loved her native land of Scotland and after retirement enjoyed returning there many times throughout the years. During her time there, she became involved with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution – RNLI. Lara is survived by her beloved sons, David Bailey and his wife, Anita, of New Zealand, and Greg Bailey of Bangor; grandsons, Grant Bailey and his wife, Abby, who are expecting Lara’s first great-grandchild, whose birth she was so excited about; her grandson, Nicholas Bailey; sister, Frances Cohen and her husband, David, of North Berwick, Scotland; her brother, Charlie Gardiner of Glenburn; many nieces and nephews; and her special feline friend, Shyanne. Lara will be missed by her many friends. A celebration of her life will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments after the service at Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor.
