LINCOLN – Alva P. Westgate, 86, passed into eternal life, in his sleep Aug. 26, 2009, at his home, after a short illness. He was born Nov. 4, 1922, in Prentiss, the son of John and Jennie (Hurd) Westgate, the youngest of four children. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He married Marguerite Haynes, Dec. 7, 1944, and they had one daughter, Donna Westgate Pereira. In addition to his wife, Marguerite; and his daughter, Donna; he is survived by a granddaughter, Marguerite and Bryan Tilton; great-granddaughters, Savannah, Michelle, Adrianna, Stephanie, Natalie and Emily Tilton; brother-in-law, Jerome Haynes; sister-in-law, Freda Delano, all of Lincoln; many nieces and nephews, some who thought of him more as a grandfather than an uncle. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Eugene; and sisters, Dorothy Perry and Julia Clark. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln, where a funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, with Pastor Wade Shaefer officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Camp Sunshine, a camp that provides support for children and families that are facing life threatening illnesses: cancer, Fanconi anemia, Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy and others.
