LINCOLN – Evelyn Morrison Heal, 94, died Aug. 25, 2009, at Colonial Health Care, Lincoln. She was born July 22, 1915, in Carroll, the only child of Grover C. and Gladys (Brown) Morrison. In 1916, Mr. Morrison moved the family to the farm he purchased on Military Road, now Main Street, overlooking the Penobscot River in Lincoln. Mrs. Heal loved the farm and views of the river and returned there to live in the evening of her life. In her early years Mrs. Heal attended Lincoln schools and later attended Oak Grove School, Vassalboro, where she graduated in 1933. She then attended Farmington State Normal School, where she was in the first class to complete the three-year teacher certificate program in 1937. She later completed courses at the University of Maine at Farmington; University of Maine, Orono; and Boston University to obtain her four-year degree. During her career as an elementary school teacher, Mrs. Heal taught in Auburn, Clinton and Lincoln. During World War II, she also taught in Reading, Mass.; Macon, Ga.; and Galesburg, Ill., while accompanying her husband during his military service. Mrs. Heal retired from teaching at age 76 in 1991 from Ella P. Burr School, Lincoln. After retiring, Mrs. Heal taught tutorial reading in Lincoln for two more years. In 1939, Mrs. Heal was married to her beloved husband, Dr. Thomas S. Heal, who predeceased her in 1975. She met “Tom” at Cold Stream Pond, West Enfield, where their parents both had summer camps. Throughout her life she spent her summers at Cold Stream Pond, where many warm memories of good times with family and friends were made. In her younger years, Mrs. Heal and her family also made numerous treasured trips to Prince Edward Island, Canada, to visit the Morrison family on her father’s side. Mrs. Heal was a dedicated member of Congregational Church of Lincoln, where she taught Sunday school and was a Boy Scout den mother for many years. She was also a member of Pilgrim Daughters, Harmony Club, Order of the Eastern Star and National Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Heal was a loving and caring daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a patient and kind teacher who believed that all children could learn as long as they had a teacher who believed in them and had high expectations for their success. She is survived by her son, Thomas B. Heal of Lincoln and his significant other, Brenda Worcester; her daughter and son-in-law, Mary M. Heal and Keith E. Kolodgie of Yarmouth; grandson, Daniel T. Smart of Bangor; grandson, Shawn M. Kolodgie and wife, Diana Kolodgie, of Fredericksburg, Va.; grandson, Andrew E. Kolodgie of Yarmouth; and great-grandson, Dominic Smart of Bangor.
