CASTINE – Carolyn Sue Unger, 69, died Aug. 25, 2009, in Bangor. Born Carolyn Sue Jensen, Sept. 28, 1939, in Chicago, her parents were Merlin “Bud” Jensen and Frances Porter Jensen of Rock Island, Ill. She graduated from Rock Island High School in 1957 and from Northwestern University in 1960, becoming a registered nurse. She had three children with her first husband, an Air Force doctor. They lived in Arlington, Va., and Falls Church, Va. Later they lived in Alaska and Germany before moving to San Antonio, Texas. Divorced in 1984, she married David G. Unger, then associate chief of the U.S. Soil Conservation Service. Later he became associate chief of the U.S. Forest Service. They lived in Washington, D.C., and Chevy Chase, Bethesda and Kentlands, Md. They had a vacation home in Sanderling, N.C. Carolyn served on the vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Georgetown, and on the historic preservation committee of the Citizens’ Association of Georgetown. She was an avid reader of fiction, history and politics; was a lifelong supporter of the arts and music; and a quintessential homemaker. She is survived by her husband of 25 years; her son, Dr. Andrew Stoebner and his wife, Dr. Holly Clause and their children, Zachary, Jacob, Anton and Juliet, of Austin, Texas; her son, Charles Stoebner of Abilene, Texas; her daughter, Sarah MacGillivray and her husband, Bart, of Portland, Ore.; two stepsons, David Unger of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Christopher Unger of Hermon; her sister, Barbara Lawless and her husband, Tom, of Peoria, Ill.; her brother, Alan Jensen and his wife, Robyn Glick, of Mequon, Wis.; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. A service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Castine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 433, Castine, ME 04421.
