BANGOR – Raymond S. Butera, 80, died peacefully Sept. 3, 2009, at his home. He was born Jan. 3, 1929, in Bangor, the son of Lorenzo and Carmela (Capostagno) Butera. Raymond was a former member of the Maine Army National Guard No. 314; a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Bangor; and Knights of Columbus Pine Cone Council No. 114, third and fourth degree, Bangor. He had been a roofer for many years, formerly employed by Eastern Fine Paper of Brewer and retired from the Pollution Abatement Facility with the city of Bangor. Surviving are his wife, Wynona W. “Nonie” (Whitman) Butera; two daughters, Suzanne M. (Butera) Astran and her husband, Stephen, and Paula E. (Butera) Matlins and her husband, Andrew, all of Bangor; four grandchildren, Rebecca (Astran) Dinardo and her husband, Anthony, of Bangor, Pfc. Michael Astran, U.S. Army, serving in South Korea, Aaron Astran and Hannah Matlins, both of Bangor; two brothers, Benjamin and Lawrence Butera; two sisters, Carmela Spencer and Vivian McKenna; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and many dear friends. He was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Charles Butera. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at St. Paul the Apostle St. John’s Catholic Church, York Street, Bangor. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments after the funeral Mass Tuesday at Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor.
