MACHIAS – Harold J. Stuart, 89, passed Sept. 8, 2009, at a local health care facility after a long illness. He was born Aug. 24, 1920, in Machias, the only son of Harold Stuart Sr. and Bertha Jasper Stuart. Harold married Jeanette Jordan, Oct. 26, 1946, in Tilton, N.H. They shared 63 years of marriage. Harold was a 1938 graduate of Machias High School and a World War II Army veteran serving in several U.S. stations, as well as in New Guinea. He worked for his father’s contracting business for many years and with the advent of television in the 1950s started a business to meet the Greater Machias needs for antennae installations. Being highly civic-minded, Harold served in all official town capacities. He was very proud to have been serving on the school board when Machias Memorial High School was accredited in the early 1960s. Harold was an avid ham radio/citizens band radio operator, enjoyed hunting and fishing, spending time at camp and early morning gatherings at the “round table” with friends. Finding Mayflowers and singing Christmas carols with family were also a couple of Harold’s simple joys. Harold is survived by his wife, Jeanette Jordan Stuart; two sons, Philip and his wife, Cherrie, of Machias, Stephen and his wife, Jeannie, of Marshfield; three daughters, Gail Jordan-Stuart of Rollinsford, N.H., Mary Stuart-Hillman and husband, Thomas, of South Portland and Nancy S. Davis and husband, Randy, of Marshfield; 10 grandchildren, Lance Stuart, Jason, Joseph and Jonathan Asbury, Matthew and Lucas Stuart, Bradford and Jameson Hillman and Jesse and Meredith Davis; 12 great-grandchildren, Marley, Tyler, Victoria, Sarah, Paige, Brooke, Jasmine, Pixie, Eliza, James, Julia and Lauren; two brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law, Roy and Wanda Jordan, Joanne Jordan, Brenda and Edward Weathersbee and Joyce Lessard; many nieces and nephews; and two special friends, Paul Farris and Max Hinz. He was predeceased by three sisters and four brothers-in-law, Lucy and Wesley Dority, Flora and Odber Smith, Geneva Stuart, Robert Jordan and Joseph Lessard; grandson, Joshua Asbury; and granddaughter, Heather Stuart. There will be a mass and celebration of Harold’s life 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Holy Name Church, Machias, with Father Eugene Gaffey officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. A service of Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Machias. www.bragdonkelley.com
