CAMDEN – Walter Stanley Karod, 97, formerly of New York Mills, N.Y., died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, at St. Marguerite d’Youville Pavillion, Lewiston. Born April 10, 1912, in Lemberg, Lwow, Austria – now Ukraine, he was the son of Michael and Mary (Karasinki) Karod. In 1913 Walter and his family immigrated to America sailing from Europe on the Auguste Victoria, arriving at Ellis Island, N.Y., Sept. 18, 1913. The family settled near other family members in the Syracuse and Utica area of New York. On May 4, 1935, he married Sophie Anna (Suzie) Prymas. They raised their two sons in New York Mills, N.Y. Walter worked at Drop Forge, Utica Cutlery and sold Buick and Chevrolet automobiles with his brother-in-law, John, and later worked at MDS, Herkimer, N.Y. In 1984 Walter and Suzie moved to Camden to be near their son, Stan and his family, and enjoyed several years living on Highland Avenue, Camden. They were communicants of Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, Camden. Walter was an avid golfer and played regularly at Goose River and Union Country Club. After moving to Maine, he enjoyed spending time at the family camp on Pitcher Pond, Lincolnville, fishing and visiting with his family. He was known to his family as Dziadziu. On Jan. 1, 2004, his wife, Sophie, passed away. Surviving are his two sons, Richard Karod and his wife, Diana, of Berry, Ky., and Stanley Karod and his wife, Linda, of Camden; four grandchildren, Mandy Karod of Watertown, N.Y., Wendy O’Brien and her husband, Steve, of Troy, Ohio, John Karod and his wife, Heidi, of Rockport and Thomas Karod of Camden; seven great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Keith, Christina, Jenny, Madeline, William and Sophie; several nieces and nephews. Calling hours and a funeral service was held Sept. 8, at Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St., Camden. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery, Camden.
