HARRINGTON – Elizabeth “Betty” Smith, 92, died peacefully Sept. 11, 2009, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Ellsworth. She was born Oct. 5, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the youngest child of Pauline and Karol Zack. Betty was educated in Brooklyn, N.Y., schools and as a very young woman worked for Beechnut Chewing Gum Co. During the war years, she met her husband of nearly 62 years, Malcolm Smith, at a dance in Brooklyn, N.Y. He asked her to marry him and when the war ended, he took his new bride home to rural Harrington. There Betty was a wife, mother and homemaker. Until her death she lived in the very same home that she and Malcolm purchased as a young married couple. She was a member of West Harrington Community Club, meeting monthly for many, many years. For several summers she enjoyed working with other women in Wyman’s blueberry factory, picking over fresh berries. She enjoyed raising her children and later on spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her hobbies included knitting and gardening – raising gorgeous peach roses – but her greatest passion was for reading. Betty and Malcolm enjoyed camping. Betty always said camping was so relaxing. They also took a few vacation trips to Canada, New Hampshire and Nashville, Tenn.; many times they were accompanied by good friends. She had a full life of nearly 93 years and will be missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Gerry and husband, David Gould, of Hollis; her son, Glen and his wife, Linda, of Columbia Falls; her grandchildren, Katie and Jeffrey Merrill of Chandler, Ariz., Nicholas Gould of Durango, Colo., and Christina Smith and fiance, Shawn Moores, of Milbridge; stepgrandchildren, Dennis Moraisey of Addison and Matthew Moraisey of Columbia Falls; and great-granddaughters, Ally and Jaycee Moores and Myra Merrill. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Malcolm Smith; her parents; her sisters, Helen, Catherine, Sally, Angeline and Marie; her brother, Thomas; and her first child, Everett. Friends may visit 6-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Milbridge. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Forest Hill Cemetery, Harrington. Gifts in her memory may be made to Gallison Memorial Library, Harrington. For online condolences, please visit our Web site at www.bragdonkelley.com.
