HERMON – Richard H. Melvin, 91, husband of the late Mary (Baker) Melvin, died Sept. 20, 2009, at his home. He was born Sept. 13, 1918, in Rome, Maine, the son of Floyd and Mildred (Nickerson) Melvin. Richard graduated from Lawrence High School and then joined the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II, serving in the Pacific and also served during the Korean War. He was a master electrician working for many years for Dole Electric. He then purchased the company with his partner and changed the name to Twin City Electric, working until his retirement. Richard was a member of Rising Virtue Lodge No. 10 AF & AM, Bangor; life member of Lynd Lodge No. 174 AF & AM, Hermon; Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Bangor; Maine Consistory 32 degree; and Anah Shriners, where he was a member of Academicians and enjoyed playing the calliope for many years. He was also a member of the LST Association, American Legion Post No. 200, Hermon; VFW Post No. 1761; The IBEW; and was an avid golfer, belonging to Hampden Country Club. He is survived by his two daughters, Dorothy and her husband, Dana Graves, and Vicki and her husband, Paul Gonyea, all of Hermon; three brothers, Ernest and Floyd, both of Bangor and Robert of Belfast; three sisters, Florence Ross of Bangor, Ruby Driscoll of Gorham and Carolyn Sadlowski of Bangor; three grandchildren, Leah and her husband, Steve, of Virginia, Clark and Keely, both of Hermon; brother-in-law, Skip Hawkes of Glenburn; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his daughter, Sandra Hawkes; his brother, Walter; and his sister, Virginia Rice. Special thanks to Hospice of Eastern Maine staff for their loving care. A service of remembrance will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Garnett Chute, pastor of Hermon Baptist Church, officiating. Friends may call 2 p.m. until the time of service Wednesday. Interment with military honors will be held after the service at Snows Corner Cemetery, Hermon. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments immediately after the interment at Lynd Masonic Lodge, Hermon.
