CASTINE and BATH – Dorothy P. Stewart, 89, died peacefully Sept. 26, 2009, surrounded by family and friends at Midcoast Hospital, Brunswick. She was born May 22, 1920, in Greenport, Long Island, N.Y., the daughter of Neville F. and Elsie (Manwaring) Powers. Dorothy grew up in Greenport, Long Island, N.Y. She attended nursing school at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City, where she became a registered nurse. She subsequently trained at Norwegian American Hospital Anesthesia School, Chicago, graduating in 1944. Dorothy worked for more than 30 years as a certified registered nurse anesthetist in New York, Connecticut and Maine. After moving from Fort Fairfield to Castine, she later married Donald L. Stewart Sr. After retiring from anesthesia she worked for 10 years with her husband at Donald L. Stewart Plumbing, Heating, Electrical and Hardware, Castine. Dorothy moved to the Bath area in 1998. She is survived by daughters, Anne Ashton of Anchorage, Alaska, Frances Stewart of Brunswick, Janet Somma and husband, Joseph, and Jane Stewart, all of Penobscot; grandchildren, Pam Fuller of Millinocket, Jan Monk of Auburn, Grace Tudan of Brunswick, Elizabeth Dow and husband, Matt, and Luke Hutchins, all of Penobscot and Megan Hutchins of San Diego; and two great-grandsons, Ben Fuller and Blake Dow. She was predeceased by a grandson, Jason Stewart Tudan; her parents; and her husband, Donald L. Stewart Sr. Friends are invited to call 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Jordan-Fernald, 141 South St., Blue Hill, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, with the Rev. William Frederich officiating. After the service interment will be at Castine Cemetery, Castine. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Dorothy’s memory be made to Beth C.
