BANGOR and FORT KENT – Raymond Guerette, 100, died peacefully Sept. 30, 2009, surrounded by family and caregivers at his home at Sunbury Village, Bangor. Born March 11, 1909, in St. Alexandre, Quebec, to Marie Louise Theriault and Jean Baptiste Guerette, Raymond was one of seven children. Prior to moving to Maine in 1947, he had several interesting adventures throughout Canada, including one as a land surveyor in Northern Quebec, a munitions worker during World War II in Montreal and working in a gold mine in the Abitibi region of Quebec. In 1947, as a result of his bookkeeping knowledge and his ability to speak English, Raymond was recruited by Great Northern Paper Co. and eventually made his home in Fort Kent, where he lived for 50 years. During his 28-year career with Great Northern, he earned a reputation as an astute logging camp operator and talented road builder. When he retired from Great Northern in 1975, he was the district superintendent for Northern Maine. In 1949, he married the love of his life, Pauline Guyon of Montreal. They were happily married for 58 years until Pauline passed away in 2007. He took great pride in becoming a U.S. citizen at age 92. He will be remembered by family and friends for his sharp wit, positive outlook, and his kind and welcoming nature. Raymond is survived by his brother, Romain of St. Alexandre, Quebec; his children, Robert and his wife, Candace, of Bangor and their children, Joshua Bears and Aimee; Daniel and his wife, Phyllis of Bangor and their children, Jeffery, Sarah, and Benjamin; Norman and his wife, Teresa, of Auburn and their children, Emily, Phillip, Michael and William; and Roland and his wife, Diane, of Topsham and their children, Mitchell, Kevin and Lisa. He is also survived by one great-grandchild, John Read, who brought much joy to his life. The family is hosting visiting hours 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor. Visiting hours will also be held 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday at Daigle Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Louis Church, Fort Kent.
