MACHIAS – Iva Mae Grant, 99, died Oct. 3, 2009, at an Eastport health care facility. She was born May 25, 1910, in Gardiner, the daughter of Charles and Acha Bell (Peacock) Dill, the youngest of 11 siblings. Iva graduated from Machias High School, Class of 1928. She worded in several businesses in Machias until she took over the family business, FL Cates, Main Street, Machias. Iva had a passion for gardening, which she shared with member of Byron McPheters Garden Club. She was a member of Hannah Weston Daughters of the American Revolution and Wash-ington County Extension and often taught classes in caning and basket making. Iva also taught Sunday school at Machias Valley Baptist Church and for the past two years attended Cornerstone Baptist Church, Eastport, where she lived with her family. She is survived by her son, Warren L. Cates and his wife, Alice, of Eastport; grandson, Cecil H. Cates of Eastport; granddaughter, Lorraine Schollenberger of Billings, Mont.; and four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a stepdaughter, Patricia Mudge of Pineo Point and Greenwich, Conn.; several nieces and neph-ews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Warren L. Cates of Machias; her second husband, Arthur Grant of Cherryfield; and a son, Ivan D. Cates.
