WHITNEYVILLE – Olive P. Ackley, 96, lost her battle with congestive heart failure Oct. 4, 2009. A lifelong resident of Whitneyville, she was born there Nov. 4, 1912, daughter of the late Frank and Zella (Albee) Pennell. Olive was a graduate of Machias High School and worked for many years at Machias Textile Mill. She was a longtime member of Whitneyville Congregational Church, where she worked endlessly on fundraisers, cooking and doing many crafts. She was always there when work was to be done. She also worked in many ways for the town of Whitneyville, serving on the school board, planning board and was president of the library well into her 90s. This was a lady that loved life and people and was always there when anyone needed help. She will be sadly missed by so many. Mrs. Ackley was predeceased by her husband, George Ackley; three brothers, Carroll, Austin and Herbert; a stepson, George Ackley Jr.; and a granddaughter, Pammy Dowling. Family members include her children, Frank Ackley and his wife, Sandra, of Alexandria, Va., Dale Ackley and his wife, Pat, of New Lebanon, N.Y., Beulah Stymiest and husband, Sandy of Brewer, Norma Haynie of Whitneyville and Annie Schencks and husband, Jimmy, of Jonesboro; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren to whom she was known as Nana. She will be sadly missed by a special granddaughter, Julie Daniels; and a niece, Carol Ann Smith. A celebration of life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Whitneyville Congregational Church, Whitneyville, with the Rev. Betty Duzen officiating, with a time of refreshment afterward. Burial will be after at Whitneyville Cemetery.
