WESTBROOK – Robert L. Ayers, 77, of Arlington Avenue, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2009, at Gosnell Hospice Home, Scarborough. He was born in Machias, the son of Truman L. Jr. and Helen Roberts Ayers. Robert lived in Machias until 1943 when he moved to Portland, graduating from Portland High School. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army with the Combat Engineers. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1951 to 1954. He worked for California Oil, Farrar Brown, and as a purchasing agent for Stanley J. Leens, Stultz Electric and Reece Corp., retiring in 1991. Robert was an outdoor enthusiast; he enjoyed spending time at his camp in Dover-Foxcroft. He also enjoyed watching college sports. He was predeceased by a brother, Roger E. Ayers of Romeo, Ill. He is survived by his wife, Arlene Severance Ayers of Westbrook; six children, Robert Jr. and his wife, Kathleen, of Monroe, Ga., Roderick and his wife, Sandra, of Warren, R.I., Karen and her husband, Anthony J. Fusco, of Portland, Brian and his wife, Pauline, of Mechanic Falls, Darryl and his wife, Kelly, of Newburgh, and Duane and his wife, Janice, of Westbrook; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook, where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday. Interment will be afterward at Woodlawn Cemetery, Westbrook.
