SURRY and BREWER – Robert T. Carlisle Jr., 88, died Oct. 5, 2009, at Brewer Rehabilitation and Living Center after a short stay. He was born Jan. 19, 1921, in Surry, the son of Robert T. and Merle A. (Cunningham) Carlisle Sr. He graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1940. Bob owned and operated Ellsworth Artesian Well Co. for many years. As he would drive by homes in Deer Isle, Surry and Ellsworth, he would say he had dug their well and could tell you how deep it was, how far to ledge, and how much water he got. Later in life, he became an insurance salesman for National Life Insurance Co. and a real estate broker. He also worked as a security guard at St. Regis Paper Mill, Bucksport; and St. Joseph Hospital, Bangor. He was a golden sheaf member of Arbutus Grange No. 450. Bob served as a selectman for the town of Surry. After his wife died in 2000, he moved to Brewer to be closer to his son and family. He was a member of North Brewer-Eddington United Methodist Church. Bob is survived by his daughter-in-law, Lynne Carlisle of Brewer; grandson, Michael Carlisle and wife, Joanne, of Boston; granddaughter, Michelle Carlisle of Eddington; a sister, Marjorie Curtis and husband, Fred, of Surry; several nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Norma Akerson of Ellsworth. He was predeceased by his parents; his beloved wife of 58 years, Janet G. Carlisle; and his only child, Robert T. Carlisle III. Relatives and friends are invited to call 10-11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where a funeral service will begin 11 a.m. with the Rev. Grace Bartlett, pastor of First Congregational Church of Brewer, officiating. Interment will be at North Bend Cemetery, Surry.
