According to Nancy Grimes of the National Alliance for Mental Illness Bangor Family Support Group, in the fall “the severe mental diseases tend to become worse because of the change in the seasons, and many families are experiencing crisis now.”
To help “families understand how to cope better with psychiatric crisis, especially to understand the psychosis disorders occurring in both bipolar disorder and schizophrenia,” the support group invites you to hear Dr. Judy Burk discuss “How Can Families Cope Better with Psychosis in Major Mental Illness?”
Burk, who is a psychiatrist associated with The Acadia Hospital in Bangor and Charleston Correctional Facility, will address the topic from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at The Acadia Hospital on Stillwater Avenue.
All interested individuals are invited to attend.

My heartfelt condolences are extended the family of my former co-worker Phil Ward of Bangor, who died this week of heart disease.
Sadly, as this family mourned the death of their father, within hours they mourned the death of his son and their brother, Dennis Ward.
Phil was a ray of sunshine at the Bangor Daily News, always happy to see you and sincerely interested in our BDN family as well as our individual families.
I will miss waving to him as he tooled by me, in his golf cart, heading for the Bangor Municipal Golf Course, and miss his asking, with a twinkle in his eye, “How’s your game?”
