BANGOR, Maine — Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. says an error affecting payments by 4,000 of its customers is being corrected.

The utility says that because of the error about 3 percent of its customers’ banking accounts were debited twice for one billing. Bangor Hydro is working with its payment vendor to resolve the processing error that occurred Wednesday.

The error affected customers who made payments by check through the U.S. mail.

Bangor Hydro Vice President Robert Lysaght says this is not a case of identity theft or fraud, and no customer information has been compromised. He says the error was not a result of any unauthorized access to their information.
