BANGOR – Chickie T. (Di Philippo) Chapman, 77, passed away Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009. She was born Oct. 2, 1932, in Bangor, daughter of James and Frances (Bushey) Di Philippo. Chickie was a graduate of Bangor parochial and public schools. She retired in 1983 due to ill health after many years of employment in the Bangor area. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Bangor, and Bangor Lionettes, and had volunteered as a tutor for the Maine Adult Literacy Program. She was a beloved mother who will be tremendously missed. She was an adored Grammie who brought special joy to the lives of her grandchildren, R. David Moleon, Courtney-Lynn Donnelly, Blake A. Lufkin, Grant M. Lufkin and Anna D. Lufkin. It was a thing of beauty to watch how they changed her life – her face softened and her eyes brightened whenever she saw them. She spent many hours playing games, doing crafts and cooking special meals for them. She always had Kit Kat bars and little treats for them when they came to visit. In fact, she always had little gifts or treats for whoever walked through the door. Few people realize she was the ultimate “giver” and never failed to remember birthdays and special occasions. Chickie was also a “planner” and her Christmas shopping was completed and wrapped as of last week. She was truly the “woman behind the man” and was the driving force for several successful businesses owned by her late husband, George, and herself. Unbeknownst to most, Chickie always wanted to teach school and her time as a literacy volunteer brought her great joy and satisfaction. She is survived by her loving daughters, Toni C. Moleon, Terri-Lynn Hall and Tina-Lou Lufkin; and by two caring sons-in-law, Ralph L. Hall and Dan H. Lufkin. She is also survived by her sisters, Carlene Burns, Gaye Gram, Darlene Petrakovich, Gail Walker, Nanette Searway, Vickie Wright, Anne Kearns, Fay De Philippo, Barbara Gaudette and Georgia Speed; and by brothers, Edward DePhilippo Sr., Leonard Chapman and David Chapman. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband and “favorite” dance partner, George E. Chapman Jr.; brothers, Orlando Di Philippo, Timothy Chapman, Robert Chapman, Philip Chapman Sr. and Gary Chapman; and sisters, Annette Avis Emerson, Katherine “Kay” Clifford, Shirley White and Mary “Betty” Vanidestine. She loved her many nieces and nephews, especially nephews, John E. Burns III, James “Jim” Burns, Joseph “Joey” Burns and Jeffrey A. Burns; and niece, Nikki Thomas, who was so thoughtful during Chickie’s last few years. The family extends their warmest appreciation to the staff at Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation for their incredible care and genuine concern for Chickie during the last several years. Family and friends are welcome to call 6-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20. There will be a graveside service after the funeral at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, 449 Ohio St., Bangor. “Momma’s girls” invite family and friends to share conversation and refreshments at Toni’s home immediately after the interment. Please no plants or flowers per Chickie’s long-standing request. Instead, a memorial donation may be made to Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation, 103 Texas Ave., Bangor, ME 04401, to benefit their Patient Activities Fund. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
