UNITY – Roland Palmer Harriman, 88, passed away Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, with family by his side at Waldo County General Hospital. Roland was born April 18, 1921, in Prospect, the son of Herman Joshua and Verna Mae (Hall) Harriman. He attended Stockton Springs High School and graduated in 1938. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre, where he participated in the clean up of recaptured Pacific Islands and later in the preparations for the anticipated invasion of Japan. Upon returning home to Prospect, he was self-employed in the woods with his horse team and later started raising poultry. He was then employed with Sears for 11 years. In 1963 he moved his family to Unity to return to his love of farming with the purchase of a dairy farm. In 1972 he sold the farm and purchased Penobscot Bay Motel, Belfast, which he operated for several years. He returned to farming until his retirement when he moved back to Unity. In those later years he obtained his real estate license. He enjoyed family, grandchildren and being involved in the community. He always enjoyed working the land and in his retirement raised crops of strawberries and raspberries for profit, for family and his own enjoyment. He was predeceased by his sisters, Lucille Bryant and her husband, Everett, and Eva McKeen and her husband, Raymond. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elsie Mary Harriman; his children, Dana Harriman and wife, Sue, Dennis Harriman and companion, Doris, Katherine Gay Harriman and Mike Harriman and wife, Eileen; his grandchildren, Christopher Harriman and wife, Judy, Kirk Ross and wife, Adri, Katherine Johnson and husband, Austin, Jared Harriman and wife, Jennifer, Sara Brown and husband, Josh, and Joshua Harriman; his great-grandchildren, Elijah, Zachary and Samuel Ross, Kyle and Kassandra Brown, Elsa Johnson and Eden Harriman; his sister, Barbara Gerow and husband, Harold; his brother, Eddie Harriman and wife, Gloria; many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at Unity Centre for the Performing Arts.
