MACHIAS – Virginia (Schoppee) Cheney died Oct. 15, 2009, at a Bangor hospital. She was born April 17, 1930, daughter of the late Millard F. Schoppee and Evelyn (Miller) Schoppee. Mrs. Cheney graduated from Machias High School and the University of Maine at Machias. She received her master’s degree from the University of Maine, Orono, and did her doctoral work at Vanderbilt University. Her teaching career began in a one-room school at Whitneyville. She was a teacher and principal at the University of Maine at Machias Campus School. When the Campus School closed, Mrs. Cheney began a teaching career in the education department of the university and retired from the University of Maine at Machias as vice president of academic affairs. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Bernard L Cheney; her daughter, Beverly (Cheney) Edwards and her husband, Dr. John Edwards; three grandsons, Benjamin of Providence, R.I., Matthew of Austin, Texas, and Peter Edwards of Spring, Texas; a sister, Rebecca (Schoppee) Carlson and husband, Russell Carlson, of North Palm Beach, Fla.; several nieces and a nephew. There will be no visitation or services. A private family committal will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Virginia S.
