MONROE – Harold J. Haley passed quietly Oct. 21, 2009, with his daughter, Carole Sue Haley of Milwaukee and sister, Barbara Tilley of Prospect, at his side. Harold had made the brave decision to stop his dialysis treatments Oct. 16 as not only his kidneys were not working, but also clots in veins going down his legs prevented circulation of blood. Surgery had been discussed, but after further tests, it was discovered that his heart was very weak and not strong enough for an operation. Harold came home with his daughter, Carole Sue, staying and caring for him and sister, Barbara, helped him. Hospice came in officially Monday and they provided wonderful, caring service. Harold was born May 1, 1943, in Brewer to Hayward and Ruth (Cyr) Haley. When he was 2, the family moved back to their home in Prospect. Harold attended schools in Bucksport and graduated in 1961, and soon after he joined the Army. He learned radio repair and that served him well for his life, as he was always fixing something. His citizens band name was “The Fixer.” During his tour of duty, he served in Korea for a year and returned to Fort Devens, Mass., for the rest of his tour. While stationed there, he married and three children were born during the nine years of marriage, Harold R., David L. and Carol Ann, now all of Worchester, Mass. After returning to Maine, he went to work at St. Regis/ Champion/International Paper Co., Bucksport, for the next 40 years, retiring on disability in December 2004 due to kidney failure. Harold married his true soul mate, Susan Achorn, Dec. 1, 1973, and adopted her daughter, Carole Sue by Susan’s previous marriage. The 34 years they had together saw them enjoying music, singing in the choir at the Frankfort church, golfing and each other. Susan passed Feb. 10, 2008, and after that Harold was completely lost and never recovered from her death. He looked forward to seeing her again in heaven. Harold is survived by his daughters, Carole Sue and Carol Ann; sons, Harold R. and David L.; sister, Barbara Tilley and husband, Paul, of Prospect; nieces, nephews and many grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Susan; parents, Hayward and Ruth Haley; two nephews and one niece. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport. A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at Frankfort Congregational Church. After the service, refreshments and conversation will be in the downstairs dining room of the church by the Guild members. Harold will be buried at a later date with a private family gathering. In lieu of flowers, a donation made in his name to Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice, 147 Waldo Ave., Belfast, ME 04915 would be appreciated.
