CHERRYFIELD – Maria Foley, 85, wife of the late Thomas Foley Jr., passed away Oct. 24, 2009, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born Aug. 8, 1924, in Bavaria, Germany, the daughter of Joseph and Barbara (Nusstein) Birkl. Maria enjoyed gardening, being a caretaker for Sen. Hollis Wyman, working at the Old Frankenstein Store, Milbridge, and especially spending time with her friends. She is survived by a brother, Albert Birkl and his wife, Gertrude; two nieces and one nephew and their families of Germany; special friend and caregiver, Mary L. Smith and family of Cherryfield; dear friends, Roland and Jenny Turgeon and family of Bar Mills; and also many friends in the Downeast area. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, William “Willie” of Germany. A special thanks to the nurses and staff members of Narraguagus Bay Healthcare facility and Maine Coast Memorial Hospital for all the wonderful care.
