STEUBEN – Robert Melvin Sargent, 88, passed away Oct. 22, 2009, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born Aug. 7, 1921, the son of Frank Sargent and Deborah (Pinkham) Sargent of Milbridge. He grew up in Milbridge and graduated from Milbridge High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946 and then returned to live out his life in Steuben. He owned and operated Sargent’s Garage from 1946 until his retirement in 1983. He loved anything mechanical, not only by profession, but also in his pastimes, as he enjoyed motorcycles and flying. In the 1960s and 1970s he was notorious for flying his gyrocopters in the area. He also loved gardening and sailing. Robert was active in community affairs, serving as member and chairman of Henry D. Moore Parish House and Library and also Steuben School Board and Planning Board. Robert was predeceased his daughter, Beth Snyder of Hancock; his sister, Patricia Willey of Milbridge; and brother, Dana Sargent of Steuben. He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Marcia Anderson Sargent; his sons, Gary of Clearlake, Calif., and Cole of Dedham; grandchildren, Stephanie Sansom of Chuluota, Fla., Alison Sargent of San Francisco and Alec Sargent of Trenton; as well as five great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. Friends and family are invited to call noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Milbridge, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. with the Rev.
