MAPLETON – Hazel M. (Corey) Gardiner, 92, peacefully fell asleep in her Lord, Jesus Christ, Oct. 30, 2009, surrounded by family at the home of her daughter, Brenda. She was born May 8, 1917, in Red Rapids, New Brunswick, to the late Miles and Elizabeth (Drost) Corey. On Nov. 22, 1936, our mother wed the love of her life, Clarence Gardiner of West Chapman, to whom she was married 61 years and lovingly raised three children. Hazel was naturalized as a U.S. citizen, Sept. 15, 1943, an accomplishment of which she was extremely proud. Mom was an active member of West Chapman Advent Christian Church for 61 years participating in missions and serving the church in many varied capacities. She was a past 4-H leader. Mom enjoyed crocheting, tatting pillowcases, scarves, dollies and linen runners. One of her great pleasures was eating out, especially at McDonald’s. She always looked forward to her Wednesday morning bagel there. Along with being a housewife and mother, Hazel also worked for 25 years at Taterstate, Washburn, and McCains, Washburn and Easton. Mom was predeceased by her beloved husband, Clarence; six brothers, Hardy, Earl, Wit, Ossie, Eldon and Perly Corey; three sisters, Alvena Tarbell, Alberta Longley and her younger sister, Mabel Cambell, to whom she was extremely close. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Boykin and her husband, Ernest; two sons, LeRoy and his wife, Kitty, and Nathan and his wife, Maralee, all of Mapleton; seven grandchildren, Gloria and Laura Boykin, Angela Buck, LeRoy Gardiner Jr., Tammy LaPointe, Michelle and Matthew Gardiner; and six great-grandchildren, Amanda Moss, Cote and Dillon Cosgro, Samantha and Cassandra Buck and LeRoy Gardiner III. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Nov. 3 at West Chapman Advent Christian Church, West Chapman Road, Chapman, with Pastor Nathan Gardiner and the Rev. Peter Campbell officiating. Friends and family may call 1 p.m. until the time of service. After the committal service at Southside Cemetery, Mapleton, a time of fellowship will be held at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be directed to Hospice of Aroostook, P.O. Box 688, Caribou, ME 04736. Condolences may be expressed at www.duncan-graves.com.
