MACHIAS – Almeda C. Sprague, 84, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at a Machias health care facility. She was born Nov. 16, 1924, in Bucks Harbor, to Leroy and Bessie (Huntley) Pettegrow. She was one of the original workers at Machias Textile Mill and retired after 27 years as a weaver. She also worked as a wreath decorator for Stevie Gay and shucked clams at Bucks Harbor Clam Shop, but will always be remembered as the “Doughnut Lady” at the Bucks Harbor Shopping Mall. Almeda was a very active worker and past president of Starboard Community Club. She was especially known for her kindness. She is survived by her brother, Richard Pettegrow and his wife, Nonie, of Machiasport; four stepdaughters, Julia Sprague and Rosetta Reynolds, both of Machias, Elizabeth Sprague of East Machias. and Kathy Garcelon of Starboard; 11 stepgrandchildren, several great-stepgrandchildren and great-great-stepgrandchildren. She was predeceased by husbands, Eugene Gove and Bruce Sprague; brothers, Earl, Gilbert and Loring Pettegrow; sisters, Ella Conley, Florence Post and Rachel Wood; and stepson, Steven Sprague. Visitation will be held noon-1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, with a service immediately afterward at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Machias, with Pastor John Sprague officiating. Interment will be after at Hillside Cemetery, Bucks Harbor.
