BELGRADE – Maj. Samuel Carson Leigh, Marine Corps, died Oct. 29, 2009, as a result of an aerial collision over the Pacific Ocean near San Diego. Born Jan. 9, 1974, in Waterville, Leigh was a 1992 graduate of Messalonskee High School and a 1996 graduate of Norwich University, Northfield, Vt., at which time he was commissioned as a second lieutenant. Maj. Leigh was a 13-year veteran of the Marine Corps, having served in Atlanta and San Diego, and two tours of duty in Iraq. Maj. Leigh and his family lived in Machias from 1979-1981 and in Lincoln from 1981-1983. He is survived by his parents, David and Ann Leigh of Belgrade; as well as two brothers, Andrew and his wife, Vanessa and daughter, Asha, of Freeport, and Philip of Austin, Texas. Also, he is survived by two aunts and uncles, Robert and Ellen Metzgar of Ada, Mich., and Roger and Desi Leigh of Lawrenceville, N.J. A memorial gathering will take place 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Veteran’s Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Messalonskee High School, Oakland. After the public luncheon, a Mass of Christian burial with military honors will be held 3 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 70 Pleasant St., Waterville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to one of the following: The Leigh Memorial Scholarship Fund, Messalonskee High School, 131 Messalonskee Drive, Oakland, ME 04963; The Good Shepherd Food Bank, P.O. Box 1807, Auburn, ME 04211; or The S. Carson Leigh Memorial Fund, Forest Hills High School, Jackman, ME 04917.
