PORTLAND, Maine — Sentencing has been delayed until January for a 62-year-old New Hampshire man who recently pleaded guilty to charges he killed a woman in a Portland apartment in 1986.
Roger Roy Bernier of Manchester had been scheduled to be sentenced this week following last month’s guilty plea to a manslaughter charge in the death of 33-year-old Mary Kelley.
Prosecutors say a court-ordered psychological examination has not been completed. A judge will use that report to help fashion Bernier’s sentence.
The Portland Press Herald says Bernier was part of a group of homeless Vietnam veterans who befriended Kelley.
The case was one of Portland’s oldest unsolved homicides until Bernier admitted killing Kelley.
Bernier faces 20 years in prison.
