ORONO, Maine — Bangor High School diving standout Ashley Higgins is headed to the University of Maine next fall, Black Bears swimming and diving interim head coach Susan Lizzotte announced Wednesday.
Two swimmers and another diver have also signed National Letters of Intent to attend Maine.
Higgins placed second in the 1-meter dive at the state championships last season and placed 11th in the 1-meter dive at the New England Championships last winter.
Joining Higgins is Kara Capossela, a diver from Riverside, Conn., and the sister of Black Bears swimmer Michael Capossela. Kara Capossela was named to the 2008-09 NISCA All-American Team as she was the top diver at the class LL and Connecticut State Open Championships.
The two swimmers who signed are Emily Puleio of Saco and Shannon Bender of Lincoln, R.I. Puleio will competing in the sprints for the Black Bears and Bender will compete in a variety of events including the individual medley, freestyle and backstroke races. Bender was third in the 200 IM at the 2008 Rhode Island state finals and placed seventh in the same event at the New England meet.
The eligibility of all student-athletes is contingent upon admission to the University of Maine and compliance with all NCAA rules, including registration with the NCAA Clearinghouse.
