BATH – Marian Katherine Clarke, 95, passed away peacefully Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, with family by her side. She was born July 24, 1914, in Columbia Falls, the daughter of Grover and Effie (Allen) Worcester. She grew up in Columbia Falls, Cherryfield area and graduated from the local high school. After high school, she went on to Gorham Normal School, and later to the University of Maine to obtain her bachelor’s degree in 1939 and master’s degree in education in 1960. Marian taught in several schools throughout her 42 years of teaching, including a one-room schoolhouse in Kents Hill. In 1950, she moved her family to Bath and taught elementary school at Washington Primary, Huse School and later retired from Bath Junior High School in 1977. In 1937, she married Warren Hazen Clarke, who passed away in 1945. Marian enjoyed many things in life, her students being at the top of the list. She loved animals; cats were like children to her, however her papillon, Gimbel, was one of her best friends. She always looked forward to the monthly visits with Claudia’s critters at Hill House. Marian’s most cherished love were her boys, Ricke and Carle, as she called them. They were the heart and soul of her life. Marion is survived by her two sons, Carle H. Clarke and his wife, Margret, and their children of Alamogordo, N.M., and Frederick “Rick” H. Clarke and his best friend, Barbara Jo Belanger, of Bath; and many good friends at Hill House, Bath. The family sends a special thanks to all the wonderful staff at Hill House for their terrific care and loving touch. They became more than caregivers to Marian, they were her extended family. At Marian’s request, there will be no services. Anyone wishing to make a memorial donation in Marian’s name may do so to The Coastal Humane Society, Range Road, Brunswick, ME 04011. Arrangements are being handled by David E. Desmond Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath.
