BELFAST – Dr. Charles A. Bunnell, 82, loving husband of Joan Ward Bunnell, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family Dec. 21, 2009, at Waldo County General Hospital. He was born April 14, 1927, to Dr. Shirley A. Bunnell and Ruth Kearney Bunnell. Charlie graduated from Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1945. He enlisted in the Navy during his senior year of high school. He graduated from Bowdoin College, Class of 1950 and Tufts School of Dentistry, Class of 1954. Charlie was called back into service as a lieutenant junior grade during the Korean War, as a dentist. He married Joan Ward, Aug. 28, 1952. Charlie was past president of Belfast Rotary Club, a member of The First Church for 50 years, The Masonic Lodge No. 24 of Belfast, and Anah Temple Shriners. He enjoyed many summers at his cottage on Pitcher Pond, Northport. Music was a big part of his life. He played both piano and organ. Charlie loved playing the piano for the Belfast Group Home at The First Church Christmas parties every December. Most of all, he dearly loved all his family. He was predeceased by his parents; his three brothers, William R. Bunnell, Dr. Kenneth I. Bunnell and Jack K. Bunnell; and son-in-law, David W. Bachelder. Charlie is survived by his wife, Joan W. Bunnell of Belfast; three daughters, Diane C. Weymouth and her husband, Ken, of Belmont, Janet L. Bachelder of Owls Head, and Andrea B. Walston and her husband, Dana, of Weymouth, Mass.; sister, Brenda Bunnell Brown and husband, Burtt, of Yarmouth; five grandchildren, Adam C. Weymouth of Belmont, Liza A. Bachelder of Austin, Texas, Sally W. Carlisle and her husband, Scott, of Loganville, Ga., Kevin D. Bachelder of Portland, and Lindsey E. Bachelder of Los Angeles; three step-grandchildren, Katie W. McElwain and her husband, Brett, of Lutherville, Md., John S. Walston and his wife, Colleen, of Chicago, and Beth H. Walston of Wellesley, Mass.; great-granddaughter, Isabelle K. Bachelder of Portland; great-stepgrandchildren, Connor and Maisie McElwain of Lutherville, Md.; many nieces and nephews. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home.
