ROCKLAND – Mark Alexander McClellan, 52, died tragically Dec. 20, 2009. Mark was born June 6, 1957, in Ayer, Mass. He was a graduate of Lawrence Academy and the University of Massachusetts where he studied wood technology. Mark had a deep love for the outdoors, the sea and wooden boats. With his extensive knowledge of the characteristics and capabilities of wood, he worked at various shipyards in Maine – Renaissance Yachts, Goudy & Stevens and Rockport Marine. Mark actively designed and constructed furniture. He was an artist with wood, and worked collaboratively on national and international commissions. Mark married Ann Nuesse, Sept. 27, 1997, in Georgetown. He was a devoted husband. He and Ann shared a love of the islands of Maine, as well as travel, skiing, hiking and sailing. He was a loving father to his two young children, Amelia “Molly,” 7, and Thomas, 9. An avid sailor, Mark was captain of the schooner Simplicity, designed by William Hand and the motor vessel Sunshine, by Baltzer-Jonesport. He ventured extensively from coastal Maine as far south as the West Indies. He instilled a love of boating in many who shared time on the water. Mark’s irrepressible zest for life and warm open heartedness will be missed by all who knew him. Mark was predeceased by his father, James L. McClellan Jr. He is survived by his children; wife; mother, Constance R. McClellan; brothers, James L. III and family, all of Harvard, Mass., Peter H. of Mexico, and Andrew R. and family of St. Louis; and his first wife, Margaret Barclay of Camden.
