MAPLETON – Laura Belle Carter Giles, 88, died Sunday evening, Dec. 27, 2009, at a Presque Isle hospital. She was born Oct. 26, 1921, in Wade, the daughter of William and Murtie (Drost) Wilcox. She worked at Converse Shoe, and Maine Potato Growers in the egg department, and as a caretaker. She is survived by three sons and their wives, Gary and Sandra Carter of Chapman, Dennis and Marilyn Carter of Mapleton, and Kevin and Jeana Carter of Chapman; three brothers, Merle Wilcox of Woodland, Sterling Wilcox of Wade and Fred Wilcox of Easton; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two husbands, Morris Raymond “Bill” Carter and Eldon Giles; and a granddaughter, Lyn Starr Carter. At her request, there will be no calling hours or funeral. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of her life 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at West Chapman Advent Church with Pastor Nathan Gardiner officiating. A graveside service will be held in the spring 2010 at Southside Cemetery, Mapleton.
