SKOWHEGAN – Mary L. Hooper, 74, passed away peacefully Dec. 27, 2009, in Skowhegan, with her family by her side. She was born May 23, 1935, in Skowhegan, the daughter of Lawrence F. and Lillian M. (Leo) Demo. She graduated from Skowhegan High School, Class of 1953. She married Henry Hooper, April 23, 1955, in Skowhegan. He died in 2006. Mary began her working career as a certified nurse’s aide in local nursing homes where she worked for many years. She then spent many years working in the area shoe shops, mostly in the packing room. Mary loved camping, loved animals, and loved having company and being around people. She enjoyed going on short trips, especially north and she loved spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by three daughters, Laurie Shaw and her husband, Hazen “Skip” Jr., of Skowhegan, Ann Laverdiere and her husband, Don, of Embden, and Vickie Hunnewell and her husband, Steven, of West Gardiner; one son, Lawrence “Brother” Hooper and his wife, Kathy, of Sangerville; six grandchildren, Sarah Hunnewell, Ashley Work, Zachary Work, all of West Gardiner, Jamie Goldsmith, Ronnie Richardson and Samara Hooper, all of Sangerville; six great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Parker, Harley, Olivia, Georgia and Julia; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by one daughter, Susan Marie Hooper; and her parents. The family thanks the staff at Cedar Ridge Rehabilitation and Living Center, Skowhegan, for the wonderful care Mary has received throughout the years. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-7 p.m. Dec. 30 at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, where a funeral service will begin 7 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Interment will be held later in the spring. Donations may be made in her memory to Somerset Humane Society, P.O. Box 453, Skowhegan, ME 04976.
