MARSHFIELD – Raymond Elvin Hanscom, 83, born Feb. 14, 1926, in Marshfield, completed his sojourn on planet Earth at 12:15 a.m. Dec. 30, 2009. Ray was a farmer, a fleet radio man in the U.S Navy; was in Iwo Jima, Okinawa, the battle of Midway and Typhoon Cobra during World War II and the Korean War. He worked for 20-plus years as a program manager for the commonwealth of Massachusetts. Ray enjoyed writing, including novels, short stories and especially editorials and letters to the Danvers Herald, Machias Valley News and Salem News. He also enjoyed Downeast humor and town politics. He served 15 years as a Danvers town meeting member, and a member of North Shore Unitarian Universalist Church of Danvers, Mass. Ray was predeceased by his parents, Herbert A. Hanscom and Lelia Denbow Hanscom; brother, Clinton Hanscom; and sister, Eleanor Hanscom Mallar Dorr. He is survived by his loving wife, Lillian Matthews Osborn Hanscom; brothers, Herbert A. Jr. and Ivan M. Hanscom; sister, Frances Hanscom Moran; his four sons, Wayne, Daniel, Ronald and Alan Hanscom; his daughter, Margo Hanscom Moody Clark; plus nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
