BREWER – James W. Morrill, known to his family and friends as Jim, died peacefully Jan. 8, 2010, at the home of his sister-in-law, Cecile Morrill, and is now resting in peace with his parents and three brothers. He was born in 1919, in Bangor, the son of Annie B. and Henry J. Morrill. James was raised in Brewer, attended St. Teresa Grammar School and graduated from Brewer High School, Class of 1936. He was a lifelong member of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church and a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. During World War II, James served with Company L 4th Division, 8th Infantry Regiment from February 1942 until he was honorably discharged in July 1945. He landed on the shores of France with the D-Day invasion, June 6, 1944. He fought for the liberation of France and Germany as a front runner for his battalion. Additional duties covered ground in Rhineland, Ardennes and Belgium. Upon his discharge, he was awarded a Combat Infantry Badge, as well as three Oak Leaf Clusters. Then he was chosen to serve in the color guard for the funeral of Brig. Gen. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. before completing his tour of duty in Bamberg, Germany. When he returned home after V-J Day, he joined his father and three brothers in the family business, Cap Morrill’s, until his retirement. Jim loved fishing, boating and snowmobiling, and shared these interests with his family. Upon his retirement, he spent many hours with his friends, Jim Cushing and James Goupee, in his garage where he so thoroughly enjoyed puttering around. He was always admired for driving around town in his impeccably clean, polished cars. James was predeceased by his three brothers, Carleton in 1983, Richard in 1993 and Henry in 2009. Not having married, he enjoyed his many nephews and nieces who were very fond of “Uncle Jim.” He is survived by his two sisters-in-law, Stella Morrill and Cecile Morrill, both of Brewer; seven nieces and nephews, Dale Morrill and his wife, Gale, of Abingdon, Va., Philip Morrill of Brewer, Doreen Page and husband, Frank, of Brewer, David Morrill and wife, Debbie, of Orrington, Jeanne Morrill and husband, Peter Barnes, of Greenfield, Mass., Jane Thomas and husband, Scott, of Orono and the Rev. Bruce Morrill, SJ of Cambridge, Mass.; six great-nieces and great-nephews, Aimee Briant and husband, Richard, of Mine Hill, N.J., Bethany Giermak and husband, Andrew, Matthew Morrill and son, Nicholas, of Orono, Emily Morrill of Portland and Bujjamma Page of Bangor. Friends may visit 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 69 State St., Brewer. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Teresa Catholic Church, South Main Street, Brewer, with the Rev. Bruce Morrill, SJ, celebrant.
