WATERVILLE – Charlene Leggett, R.N., 75, died Jan. 9, 2010, surrounded by loving family at Thayer Hospital. She was born Nov. 1, 1934, in Waterville, the youngest daughter of the late Charles E. Sr. and Aurea M. Crosby. She was a lifelong resident of Waterville and worked as a night supervisor at Sister’s Hospital, Seton Hospital and Thayer Hospital for many years. Charlene was a registered nurse, graduating from St. Joseph’s Hospital, Nashua, N.H., and received her Bachelors of Science degree in nursing from Boston College. Ms. Leggett was an active member of World War I American Legion Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars. She held many offices in the National and Regional organizations. She was national nurse for many World War I conventions throughout the country. She was a past president of American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 5 and VFW Auxiliary Post No. 1283. Charlene was very active in Ward 1 as a ballot clerk and acting moderator. She was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Ms. Leggett was an active volunteer at Togus VA Hospital for many years. Survivors include her son, Michael A. Leggett of Waterville; two grandsons, Jeremiah Leggett of Oregon and Mathew Leggett of Sanford; one great-grandson, Kyle Leggett of Sanford; two sisters, Shirley Dickey and husband, Donald, of Waterville and Lady Lake, Fla., and Delnette Clark and husband, Kenneth, of Rockledge, Fla.; a brother, Charles E. Crosby Jr. and wife, Joanne, of Topsham; as well as many cousins. She also had a very close relationship with Barbara and Debbie Stowe; as well as many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville. A Christian Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent in Charlene’s memory to Waterville Salvation Army, Main Street, Waterville, ME 04901.
