CAMDEN – David Duncan Jr., 83, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at his home after a short illness. Born Feb. 23, 1926, in Vinalhaven, he was the son of David and Mary (Arey) Duncan. David was a 1944 graduate of Vinalhaven High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in the Philippines. After his discharge in 1946, David, along with his brother-in-law, started Bruce & Duncan Garage, a taxi and trucking business in Vinalhaven. On June 6, 1952, David married Patricia Skoog, daughter of Lucy and Gus Skoog of Vinalhaven. They raised three children, Wendy, Barbara and David III. After the closing of the garage business, David went to work at Skoog Boat Shop apprenticing in carpentry and boat building with his father-in-law, Gus Skoog. The business specialized in building lobster boats for the local fisherman and built several pleasure craft, one of which was shipped to California. A 60-year Mason, David held memberships with St. Paul’s Lodge No. 82, Rockport, and Moses Webster Lodge No. 145, Vinalhaven. A 32nd degree Mason, David was also a member of Rockland Valley Scottish Rites of Maine Consistory of Portland, Kora Temple Shrine of North America and Ocean View Chapter No. 201 Order of the Eastern Star. In 1975, David and Pat moved to Rockport, where he served as the maintenance director for SAD 28 schools, until his retirement. In 2009, the Duncans moved to a new home in Camden to be closer to their daughter, Wendy and her husband, Richard Crossman, being aware of David’s failing health. Kno-Wal-Lin provided hospice care, which enabled him to remain at home until his passing. Surviving is his wife of 57 years, Patricia; daughter, Wendy Crossman and her husband, Richard, all of Camden; daughter, Barbara Meadows of Scarborough; grandchildren, Duncan Patrick Crossman and his fianc?e, Mae Polson, of Brighton, Mass., Anna Crossman of Camden, Bethany Carter of Scarborough, and David Carter and his wife, Amanda, of Cushing; his brother-in-law, Leonard Skoog and his wife, Edith, of Vinalhaven; and one niece, Diane Morrison and her daughter, Aimee Maciborski, both of Panama City, Fla. Calling hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, at Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St., Camden. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at John Street United Methodist Church, Camden, with the Rev. Dr. Richard Sanner officiating. A reception will be immediately after. A memorial service will be held in May at Union Church, Vinalhaven, and will be announced.
