BANGOR – Phillip Densmore Small, 95, passed away peacefully, Jan. 11, 2010, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor, where he had been a resident since October 2003. He was born Aug. 12, 1914, in Charleston, the eldest son of Sidney and Maude (Hanson) Small. He was a 1934 graduate of Higgins Classical Institute, Charleston. Mr. Small served honorably in World War II in the medical field and his war assignments included service on the Burma Road, serving in the Medical Corps 25th Field Hospital, 38th Division under General Stillwell. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and numerous other civic and social organizations. He was well known in the Brewer area where he was employed for several years at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Brewer and also well known in the Dover-Foxcroft area, where he spent many years living with his nephew, Jeff Small, prior to his move to the veterans home in Bangor. Everyone who got to know him will attest to his genuine American patriotism. Throughout the years, he received many trophies as a champion in horseshoes, winning four consecutive State of Maine Championships. He is survived by a brother, Charles Small and his wife, Hattie, of Litchfield, N.H.; a sister, Ellen (Small) Pelletier and her husband, Robert, of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews. Phillip was predeceased by a sister, Clarice Small; a brother, Donald Small; and two baby brothers, who died in infancy. He will be sorely missed by his family and numerous friends, as well as the staff at Maine Veterans’ Home, whom the family wish to thank for the wonderful love and attention he received while in their care. Interment will be at Charleston Village Cemetery in the spring with a memorial service to be scheduled at a later date.
