MILFORD – Melvin Thomas Spriggs, 94, passed away Jan. 12, 2010, surrounded by his family at home. He was born July 19, 1915, in Baltimore, to Archie and Bessie (Shepherd) Spriggs. He was a graduate of Annapolis Senior High School. Melvin was employed at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he retired after 32 years. Melvin will be sadly missed by his daughter, Janis and her husband, Jerome Niles; grandsons, John Grindel, Adam Kirkland and Matthew Niles; three great-granddaughters, Tori, Taylor and Maddison Grindel; a special niece, Christine Spriggs; dear friend, Hazel Burton; and his cat, Smokie. In addition to his parents, Melvin was predeceased by his wife, Madeline Latty; his brothers, Bertram, Walter and Jim Spriggs; one sister, Irma Hopkins; and his identical twin and dearest friend, Alvin A. Spriggs. Family and friends may call 2-4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, where a funeral service will be held 4 p.m. with the Rev. William Roix, of United Pentecostal Church of Cardville, officiating. Donations in Melvin’s memory may be made to Old Town-Orono Animal Orphanage, P.O.
