NEWPORT – Wayne Spraggins, 71, died peacefully Jan. 16, 2010, surrounded by his family at a Pittsfield hospital. He was born Dec. 28, 1938, in Wauchula, Fla., a son of Cecil E. and Wilma (Smith) Spraggins. He served for 20 years in the U.S. Coast Guard as a boatswain’s mate before moving to Newport in 1977. He worked as a mechanic at Pray’s Gulf Station and an oil burner technician for Shorey’s Oil Co., both in Newport, and retired from Staple’s Oil Co., Pittsfield. He was a member of Barrrows-Skidgel Post American Legion, Newport, and served on several Newport committees, including Newport Sanitary District and the board of selectmen. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf. Wayne especially looked forward to the annual fishing trips to Long Pond and the family hunting camp in Palmyra. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Marjorie of Newport; three sons, Jim Spraggins and wife, Lisa, of Newport, Ed Chase and wife, Adrienne, of Topsham and Michael Chase and wife, Robin, of Palmyra; a brother, Royce of Georgia; a sister, Joanne Mann of Oklahoma; an aunt, Odell McGee of Florida; special niece, Kim Spraggins; and sister-in-law, Janice Spraggins, both of Tennessee; grandchildren, Tracy Clifton and husband, Rob, of Newport, Eileen Chase and husband, Joel, of Bangor, Christy Chase of Exeter, Ben and Nick McNeal of Topsham, Jaime and Nate Spraggins of Newport and Katelyn-Rose Chase of Palmyra; five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Wayne is also remembered by special friends, Dick Savageau of Palmyra and Jeff Peabody of Newport. He was predeceased by a daughter, Deborah Turnbull; and a brother, James Spraggins. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, with the Rev. George Finnemore officiating.
