MACHIAS – Mildred E. Whiles, 78, died Jan. 16, 2010, surrounded by her family at a Bangor health care facility. She was born Feb. 14, 1931, in Washington, N.H., a daughter of the late Perley and Frances (Cook) Crane. Mildred retired in 1995 from Downeast Community Hospital after working for 19 years as the admitting supervisor. Millie, as she was known by many, enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, crafts and most of all, spending time with her family. She was also an avid reader until her recent illness. Mildred is survived by her husband of 58 years, William Whiles of Machias; her three children, Debra Johnson and her husband, Kenneth, of Ellijay, Ga., Kim Schultz and her husband, Dr. Kevin Schultz, of Bloomington, Ill., and Scott R. Whiles of Wallingford, Conn.; seven grandchildren, William, Allison, Julie, Scott, Travis, Heather and Kylie; three great-grandchildren; as well as her two sisters, Doris Oliver of New Mexico and Jean Kenney of Los Altos, Calif. The family extends their gratitude to the intensive care unit nurses at Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor; their palliative care unit and Marshall Healthcare Facility, Machias, for the wonderful care they provided to Mildred. Family and friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 220 Court St., Machias, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20.
