LIMESTONE – Elwood J. Johndro, 87, husband of Reta M. (Holmes) Johndro, passed away Thursday evening, Jan. 21, 2010, at a Caribou health care facility, after a brief illness. He was born Sept. 29, 1922, in Limestone, the son of Eli and Louise (Greenier) Johndro. A lifelong resident of Limestone, Elwood attended local schools and was married to Reta M. Holmes, Sept. 13, 1953. He had been employed by Limestone School Department for more than 22 years. After retirement, Elwood worked for Limestone Fire Department on a part time basis. He enjoyed playing his fiddle and loved children and all animals. In addition to his parents, Elwood was predeceased by two brothers, Amos and Earl Johndro; and two sisters, Pearl Pond and Elva Pond. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Reta M. Johndro of Limestone; one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Patricia Johndro of Caribou; one sister, Doris Pond of Farmington; two grandchildren, Melissa Lewis of Portland and Bryant Lewis and his wife, Candice; three great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Abigail and Benjamin Lewis, all of Orono; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Jan. 23 at Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield, where funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, with the Rev. Robert Amuzzini officiating. Spring interment will take place at Advent Cemetery, Limestone. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Mr. Johndro to the charity or organization of one’s choice.
