MILFORD – F. Laurence “Bud” Nadeau Jr., 85, died peacefully Jan. 22, 2010, with his beloved wife of 62 years by his side at the Maine Veterans Home. He was born June 5, 1924, in Millinocket, a son of Frederick Laurence Sr. and Lena Margaret (Gagnon) Nadeau. He was a World War II submariner, U.S. Navy veteran assigned to the USS Queenfish SS393, on which he made five combat runs in the Pacific Theater. He was mentioned in the book “Bridge of the River Kwai” for his actions in rescuing survivors of a torpedoed ship. Bud proudly served his country for a total of 21 years, serving the first three in the Navy and then 18 years in the Air National Guard stationed in Bangor. Upon leaving the Navy, Bud worked as a game warden in the Livermore Falls area. He was employed by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. for 32 years as an agent and then district manager. Bud and his wife started B&E Redemption Center, Old Town. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and traveling, and looked forward to the annual hunting trips with his son, grandsons and close friends. Bud will be remembered for his sense of humor and his story telling ability. He was a member of Holy Family Parish; Rotary Club of Old Town, where he serviced as vice president; Knights of Columbus; American Legion; and was a life member of the U.S. Submariners Veterans. He is survived by his cherished wife of 62 years, Evelyn M. (Kimball) Nadeau of Milford; two grandsons, Chris Nadeau of Goffstown, N.H., and Greg Nadeau of Manchester, N.H.; daughter-in-law, Ruth York of New Gloucester; a brother, Louis Nadeau of Daytona Beach, Fla.; niece, Gail Nightingale; and two nephews, Dale and Hugh Dinwiddie. He was predeceased by his only son, F. Laurence “Larry” Nadeau III; and sister, Louise Dinwiddie. The family sends a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and entire staff at the Maine Veterans Home for their loving care and compassion shown to Bud during this past month and to all the friends/ neighbors, especially Kathy and Mike Lafontaine on Richard’s Lane, for their support. At this time, there will be no formal services, but the family asks that Masses be said for Bud at Holy Family. There will be a graveside service in the spring at East Millinocket Cemetery.
