AUGUSTA, Maine — A Maine lawmaker says it takes the state Human Rights Commission too long to decide some cases — and she’s hearing about it from constituents.
Democratic Rep. Anna Blodgett of Augusta wants the commission to rule on complaints within a year of the filing date. The present law gives the panel two years to make a determination.
The Judiciary Committee plans a work session on Blodgett’s bill on Thursday afternoon. During a hearing before the committee last week, Blodgett said two years is too long to make a person wait.
Lynne Nash, who filed a complaint with the commission in 2008, also testified in favor of the bill. Nash said that continuing to work in an office with employees who are listed in a complaint makes for an unacceptable and hostile work environment.
