AUGUSTA, Maine — A money-saving plan in Gov. John Baldacci’s budget to consolidate some functions of four of Maine’s natural resource-based agencies is running into legislative opposition.
Members of three legislative committees that oversee the targeted departments — Conservation, Agriculture, Marine Resources and Inland Fisheries and Wildlife — have an alternative plan to save $1.25 million.
They want to add two others agencies, Environmental Protection and State Planning, to the mix and give each of the six agencies a certain amount of money to cut.
A proposal in Baldacci’s budget is similar to two his two previous consolidation proposals to save $1.25 million.
