DIXMONT – Alice M. (McKinley) Smith, 81, passed away peacefully Jan. 27, 2010, surrounded by her loving family at a Bangor hospital. Alice was born Jan. 4, 1929, in Brooks, to the late Fred and Valma (Dellaway) McKinley. Alice grew up in Dixmont and was a 1946 graduate of Hampden Academy. She worked outside the home for a short time before marrying and starting her family. Her greatest joy was being a mother and exceptional homemaker. Her home and family were always neat, tidy, and well fed as they remember her famous biscuits and doughnuts. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and watching TV, but most of all enjoyed time spent with her family. Alice will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. Alice is survived by her children, Jim Smith and wife, Cynthia, Laurel Kelly and husband, Jerry, all of Dixmont, Linda Hatch and husband, Jim, of Waterville, and Lisa Penney and husband, Kelly, of New Gloucester; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Smith of Dixmont; brother, John McKinley; sister, Janet Welch and husband, Earl; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins; and her special feline companion, Tom. Alice was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Marlowe Smith; and her son, Jay Smith. A funeral celebrating Alice’s life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson officiating.
