With the state budget shortfall causing deep cuts in aid to local schools and revenue sharing to municipalities, will local property taxes jump to make up the difference? Or will local school and municipal officials cut their spending corresponding to the reduced revenue? Can they cut enough? If they can’t, should the property tax bear the burden for
these activities? Or should the governor and Legislature consider hikes in statewide
taxes? Would raising taxes be dangerous during a recession? Or is it necessary?
