KENNEBUNK – It is with deep sadness that the family and friends of Sara Blodgett Page, 92, of Huntington Commons mourn her passing. She died peacefully Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, surrounded by her daughter, Hannah F. Marston; and nephew, Frederic S. Blodgett, at home. She was born Dec. 5, 1917, in Bucksport, the oldest child and only daughter of Frederic S. and Jessie (Nye) Blodgett. Sara graduated in 1936 from Bucksport High School and in 1940 from Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Mass. She also later earned a Master of Arts degree in social work in Massachusetts. Sara loved and excelled in her role as a teacher at Perkins School for the Blind, Watertown, Mass., and was later a dedicated social worker in the town of Braintree, Mass., where she was a resident for 23 years and deeply involved in First Congregational Church there. She and her late husband, Stanley E. Page, were born only one month apart and grew up together in Bucksport. They were christened together and their families’ summer cottages were side by side at Alamoosook Lake, Orland, where their children, grandchildren and great-grandson still vacation every summer. While they were both out of state in college, they fell deeply in love and were married at Sara’s family home in Bucksport, Oct. 25, 1942. Sara took great pride in the fact that throughout the years nine family brides have worn her lovely wedding gown. She moved to Kennebunk with her husband and her youngest daughter, Hannah F. (Page) Marston, in 1970 and she soon accepted a position as a social worker for the Department of Human Services, Portland, and played a vital role in placing many children in adoptive and foster families. Sara was a long-standing member of her beloved local PEO association and always took great pleasure in service to the young women of her community through this organization. She was an active and committed member of Christ Church, Kennebunk, and regularly attended services at Methodist Church of Orland while staying at her Alamoosook Lake home in Orland during the summer months. Sara was known to all as a loving, kind, gentle, dedicated lady who was a gifted hostess and excellent cook who loved to entertain. Fearless in life she always maintained her strong spirit, sense of humor and care for others. She was an important part of the opening ceremony of the Waldo-Hancock Bridge, Prospect, in 1932 – which her father was instrumental in having built when he was a state legislator. She also helped open the new Penobscot Narrows Bridge in 2007, which replaces the former bridge which she loved so much. Sara was predeceased by her husband, Stanley E. Page; her brother, Dr. Frederic M. Blodgett; her sisters-in-law, Phyllis H. Blodgett and Virginia P. Miller; and brothers-in-law, Robert H. Page and Charles Miller. She is survived by her brother, E. Donald Blodgett of Milwaukee and Orland; and her sisters-in-law, Patricia S. Blodgett of Milwaukee and Phyllis Page of Marysville, Pa. She is also survived by her son, Nathaniel B. Page and his wife, Fay H. Page, of Bainbridge Island, Wash., and La Quinta, Calif.; daughters, Priscilla P. Lopez of Placentia, Calif., and Hannah F. Marston of Kennebunk; grandchildren, Jessica P. McLin and husband, Dewey, Catherine B. Page, Genaro E. Lopez, Benjamin H. Page and wife, Stephanie, and Christopher P. Marston; great-grandson, Nathaniel S. Page; many nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous good friends. A celebration of her life will be held 2 p.m. Friday, April 9, at Christ Church, 6 Dane St., Kennebunk, and in the summer at Methodist Church, Orland. Burial will be at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Orland.
