ROCKLAND – John R. Young, 76, died Sunday, March 7, 2010, at home after an extended illness. Born Oct. 21, 1933, in Houlton, he was the son of John R., Sr. and Margaret Leighton Young. He was educated in Houlton area schools and entered the U.S. Marine Corps in January of 1951. After training at Parris Island, Mr. Young served as a tank commander in Korea during the Korean War. He returned to Houlton after his military discharge, working briefly with Coca-Cola in Presque Isle, covering Aroostook and Washington counties. His next employment was with New England Telephone Company in Aroostook County. He married C. Burnett Mowatt, Feb. 14, 1956, in Calais. The couple lived in many communities throughout the state and first came to Rockland with the phone company in 1971. He transferred to Bangor in 1983, and retired in 1986 as a supervisor, after 32 years of service. In 1993, the couple returned to Rockland, where they have since lived. For 20 years they enjoyed wintering in Florida, where they met many friends. In earlier years he enjoyed golfing, sport fishing and traveling in their RV. Mr. Young is survived by his wife of 54 years, Burnett of Rockland; son, J. David Young and his companion, Melinda Wineburgar, of Danbridge, Tenn.; two daughters, Barbara and her husband, Kenneth Rich Jr., of Rockland, and Kathryn Young of Mount Kisco, N.Y.; two brothers, William Young and his wife, Pat, of Oxford, England, and Bernard Young and his wife, Rose, of Fayetteville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Kaitlyn A. Young, Anna L. Rich and Makenzie R. Boylan; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by seven siblings, Ella, Madeline, George, Aubrey, Leverett, Hershal and Kenneth. Mr. Young’s family thanks the folks at Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care & Hospice for their kind and gentle care during his illness, as well as the friends and neighbors who helped with transportation while he was receiving radiation treatments in Bath. Friends and relatives are invited to gather for a reception 2-4 p.m. Friday, March 12, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 104 Limerock Street facility, Rockland.
